Frequently asked questions

We are happy to assist you with all aspects of the Deutschlandstipendium, but you will find some answers to frequently asked questions on this page. If your problem remains unanswered, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Applicants

You will receive the acceptance or rejection letters for the Deutschlandstipendium in mid/end of October.

All students and first-year students who are enrolled at the University of Wuppertal can apply. As described on our application procedure page (link): Don't be afraid to apply. Your social commitment and the hurdles you have successfully overcome in your CV play just as big a role in the selection process as (very) good achievements on your educational path.

Of course, people with a refugee background can also apply for the Deutschlandstipendium.

As a scholarship holder, you will receive 300 euros per month, half of which will be provided by your sponsor and the other half by the federal government.

No. The scholarship is paid regardless of other types of income, for example from mini-jobs or student jobs. However, the Deutschlandstipendium cannot be combined with all other scholarships. You can find more information in the section on double sponsorship.

The acceptance is valid for two semesters, i.e. for a period of one year. The university then checks whether the funding criteria are still met. If the pro-rata private funding is still available, funding will then be granted for a further period of study. The maximum funding period depends on the standard period of study in your respective degree programme. Funding can be granted up to the end of the standard period of study.

You can apply for a maximum of the last two semesters of your degree programme within the standard period of study. If your Bachelor's degree programme is six semesters in the standard period of study, for example, you can apply for the 5th and 6th semester at the most. If you are already in a Master's programme and the standard period of study is four semesters, for example, you can apply for the 3rd and 4th semester at the most.

No. According to the Scholarship Programme Act, only students up to the consecutive Master's degree are eligible for this scholarship. Scholarships for doctoral students are offered by numerous other foundations and programmes for young researchers. You can find information on this on this website.

No. Only applications completed within the deadline in the online portal can be processed.

School and academic achievements are an important criterion for assessing the performance and talent of applicants (Abitur grades, etc.). However, other criteria also count in the selection process, such as involvement in an association, politics or the church, raising one's own children, caring for relatives, helping in the parental business or overcoming particular biographical obstacles. The application and selection process should take into account the applicant's entire personality.

Each application is assessed and evaluated in its overall context. There is therefore no pre-defined grade point average, but a minimum average of 2.3 should be achieved.

All achievements are counted towards the Germany Scholarship. Please take your average grade from your current WUSEL account statement. In degree programmes without ECTS points, please calculate an unweighted average by adding up all the examinations you have passed and dividing the total by the number of examinations you have added up. As proof, please enclose a current WUSEL account statement or the certificates on the basis of which you calculated the average.

ECTS points are the credit points that you acquire during your studies and which are indicated on your WUSEL account statement.

The scholarships are awarded by selection committees of the individual faculties of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

Parallel funding is possible in principle, but only if the scholarship holder's other funding is of an immaterial nature. Anyone who already receives funding of more than €300 per month cannot additionally receive the Deutschlandstipendium. You can find more details in the following PDF document. (german)

No. The Deutschlandstipendium is a supplement to BAföG. The BAföG, as an instrument of broad-based support, is designed to make education and further training possible for as many people as possible. The Deutschlandstipendium specifically supports particularly gifted students. Scholarship holders can combine both support measures without restrictions.

No, the scholarship must not be payed back.

You can move up to a vacant place at any time during the scholarship year (October - September) if existing scholarship holders lose their funding commitment due to the end of their studies or other reasons.

The funding commitment ends in September of the following year and can therefore be less than 2 semesters, depending on when you move up.
